Its simply amazing how fast they grow up, and yet how long a car trip with children can seem. The secret to a fun and successful adventure in the care is entertainment. If its a one hour trip to grandma’s house or a family adventure across the country games can pass the time between pit stops and keep everyone in the car happy.
Here are some Great Ideas!
Karoke Car
Make sure you pack a few music selections you can all sing a-long to. It doesn’t always have to be Barney, stress to your child the importance of taking turns and trying new things. They might be very surprised at what they learn to like. My four-year-old’s favorite sing-a-long is “We will rock you” by Queen.
Scavenger Hunting on the Road
Give each child a list of items to find on the trip. Make it up ahead of time and the more specific to your journey the funner(State sign, Alaska license plate, Mcd’s sign, deer, etc). For older kids you can even add little history and geography lessons to go along with items they are looking for. Even if your trip is just to the airport have your scavenger hunt continue in the airport and on the plan. (Red suitcase, police officer, newspaper stand, taxi cab).
License Plate Game
This one was always a favorite for my family as we drove to the Black Hills. Just make up a list of the states, even Canadian provinces if you like. See how many you can find before you get back home.
Captain’s Log
Help you child make their own travel journal. This diary of the trips events accomplished three main things. First it creates a great memory for your child and is preserved forever, second it keeps you kids busy in the car and gives them an outlet for their creativity and little tifts with siblings. Lastly this activity is great for helping your kids sharp while they are out of school, polishing their creative writing, penmanship, and language skills, just make sure you don’t let them know it isn’t just about having fun.
