Some cell phones are designed to use a Subscriber Identification Module, or SIM card, which is a microchip that stores subscriber data. For cell phone communication overseas, it is more practical to just rent a cell phone from the place where you are going rather than use your own cell phone that might have problems working with a different network. The SIM card is issued by a carrier and provides cell phone service by activating any phone where the SIM is inserted.
A locked cell phone, however, will only recognize a SIM card from a particular carrier. If a cell phone is unlocked, it will recognize a SIM card from any carrier. This “lock” is a software setting that keeps the cell phone “loyal” to only one carrier. To avoid problems like these, it would be better to just rent a temporary cell phone from a carrier that operates in the particular country you are visiting and just leave your own cell phone at home.
