I remember the plans I had outlined for my life when I was young: get a great job. Learn new things. Have luxury vacations every year. Buy a car. It all seemed simple and doable back then; now I can only laugh at my lists.
I had acquired an awakening during a visit to a children’s museum. I saw kids enjoying and having fun, marveling at the spectacular displays. Then later I found out that these kids were ill with various dreaded diseases, some of them terminal. I could not connect the heavy weight of their disease to their smiles on their faces. It was then I realized that these kids had something I had long been missing in my life…
