As the big holiday week approaches, many of us are planning to travel to see our families and loved ones all over the country. While it is wonderful to see that family still means something to so many Americans, driving during the holidays can be really dangerous. There are more cars on the road than any other time except Thanksgiving, and often the road conditions are far from optimal.

Popping Ears and Dry Air

Flying is a routine activity for millions of Americans, and raises no health considerations for the great majority of them. However, there are certain things you can do to ensure that your flight is as comfortable as possible. Here are a couple of simple issue that we have addressed to help making your flying experience more pleasant.

 

Dealing With Popping Ears

 

Changes in pressure can temporarily block the Eustachian tube, causing your ears to ‘pop’ or to experience a sensation of fullness. To equalize the pressure, swallow frequently; chewing gum sometimes helps. Yawning is also effective. Avoid sleeping during descent; you may not swallow often enough to keep ahead of the pressure change. If yawning or swallowing doesn’t help, use the valsalva maneuver:

We have all heard the screaming child a few rows back when we are flying. Sometimes its unavoidable but for those parents like me who don’t want to be in that situation here are few tricks to have up your sleeve when voyaging into the air with your little bundle of joy.

 

Backpacks

 

Make it their own suitcase, their own carry-on. Let them pick out a few of their favorite toys, books, coloring activities, age appropriate travel games, cards, and of course gum. If you are extra prepared make a trip to the store and buy a couple of small gifts, wrap them and hide them in their bag for an extra surprise.

I know a lot of adults who are diverse in interests and experiences because they traveled with their parents since early childhood. Having a child on a trip can help the adults view things in a different light and open them up to new things. Plus, it’s a chance to infect your kids with the travel bug, and especially helpful in helping them understand why you want to spend their college fund on a retirement cruise for yourself!
